Football has been a way for Samoan athletes to contribute to, support, and represent their family, village, and nation since the 1970s, supported by the legacies of US empire and imperial formations. Lisa Uperesa's book "Gridiron Capital" explores the social and physical costs of pursuing a football career and offers insights into safeguarding health and wellbeing.

Since the 1970s, a "Polynesian Pipeline" has facilitated the migration of football players from American Samoa to Hawaii and the mainland United States, enabling them to pursue collegiate and professional football careers. In her book, Gridiron Capital: Lisa Uperesa explores the cultural and social factors that have made football an integral part of Samoan communities. For Samoan athletes, football goes beyond mere opportunity; it becomes a means to contribute to, support, and represent their family, village, and nation. Uperesa's research, which draws on ethnographic fieldwork, archival research, and media analysis, reveals how the Samoan dominance in football is rooted in the legacies of US empire and a set of imperial formations that categorize Indigenous Pacific peoples as racialized subjects of US economic aid and development. Through her analysis, Uperesa sheds light on the social and physical toll of pursuing a football career, the structural forces that drive Pacific Islander youth towards athletic labor, and the potential avenues for safeguarding their health and well-being in the future.

Recognized with the Duke University Press Scholars of Color First Book Award, Gridiron Capital offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics surrounding football, race, and identity in the Pacific region.
