The Womens March is a captivating historical novel by Jennifer Chiaverini that delves into the women's suffrage movement, inspired by three courageous women who risked their lives and freedom in the fight for voting rights.

Set in the early 20th century, the story follows 25-year-old Alice Paul, who returns to her native New Jersey after years of advocating for women's suffrage in Great Britain. Despite facing physical and emotional exhaustion from her imprisonment and hunger strikes, Alice remains determined to revitalize the suffrage movement in her homeland. While nine states have already granted women the right to vote, securing universal suffrage through a constitutional amendment is the ultimate goal.

To garner support for the campaign, Alice organizes a magnificent procession down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, just before the inauguration of President-elect Woodrow Wilson, a staunch opponent of suffrage. Joining the march is 39-year-old Maud Malone, a librarian and advocate for women's and workers' rights. Maud, the daughter of Irish immigrants, has earned a reputation for interrupting politicians' speeches with sharp questions they would rather avoid.

Civil rights activist and journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett is also determined to include women of color in the march and the proposed amendment. Born into slavery in Mississippi, Ida fears that white suffragists may exclude Black women if it aligns with their interests. On March 3, 1913, the historic march begins, but the police fail to prevent large crowds of aggressive men from blocking the parade route. The men jeer, shout threats, and physically assault the marchers, putting their lives and the success of the demonstration at risk.

The Womens March is based on actual events and provides a fascinating account of the struggles and sacrifices made by these women in their quest for equality. Through their courage and determination, they paved the way for future generations to achieve gender justice and voting rights.
