In December 1944, the German military made its final attempt to end the Second World War by throwing in all its reserves in a desperate attempt to shatter the Allied lines. This attempt, known as the Battle of the Bulge, was delayed by poor planning, bad weather, tortuous terrain, and the determined defense of key towns and villages. The Allies were able to hold the northern and southern shoulders of the attack, hemming the Germans in. As the fortunes of battle were reversed, the Allies struck back, creating the Bulge.

In the final months of World War II, the German military made a last-ditch effort to bring an end to the conflict by deploying all of its reserves in a desperate bid to break through the Allied lines. Following their successful breakthrough in the Ardennes region, two Panzer armies aimed to cross the River Meuse and advance towards the heart of Belgium. However, a series of factors, including poor planning, adverse weather conditions, challenging terrain, and the fierce resistance put up by key towns and villages, slowed down their progress. Despite these obstacles, the Allies managed to hold their positions on the northern and southern flanks of the attack, effectively trapping the German forces in a large bulge.

As the tide of battle began to shift against the Germans, the Allies launched a fierce counterattack. Led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, they managed to push the German forces back and reclaim lost territory. The Battle of the Bulge was a pivotal moment in the war, as it marked a significant turning point in favor of the Allies. It demonstrated the resilience and determination of the Allied troops and showcased the effectiveness of their combined forces.

In his book, "Battle of the Bulge 1944–45," historian Andrew Rawson provides a comprehensive and concise account of these critical days. Supported by a timeline of events and an order of battle, Rawson delves into the strategies, tactics, and leadership that played a role in the battle. He offers insights into the decisions made by both sides, the challenges they faced, and the sacrifices that were made.
