This publication is a result of the IAEA's Modelling and Data for Radiological Impact Assessments (MODARIA) programme, which encompasses a wide range of activities aimed at improving the understanding and assessment of radiological impacts. Within this programme, Working Group 7 played a crucial role by focusing on the harmonization and intercomparison of models for the accidental release of tritium to the atmosphere. Comprising ten working groups, Working Group 7 specifically concentrated on the modelling of tritium in the atmosphere and the subsequent terrestrial processes that govern the dynamic transfer of tritium within the environment.

The report begins with a comprehensive literature review, providing an overview of the state-of-the-art modelling techniques used to simulate tritium in the terrestrial environment. This section serves as a foundation for the subsequent analysis and intercomparison of four models.

In the second half of the report, the results of an extensive intercomparison exercise are presented. Four models were selected for this exercise based on their relevance and capabilities in simulating tritium release scenarios. These models were subjected to a series of tests and evaluations to assess their accuracy and reliability in capturing the key processes involved in tritium transfer.

The intercomparison exercise yielded valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each model. It helped identify areas where improvements can be made to enhance the accuracy and reliability of future modelling efforts. The results also provided guidance on the direction of future research in this field, highlighting the need for further development and refinement of models to better account for the complex dynamics of tritium transfer in the terrestrial environment.

Overall, this publication serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in the assessment of radiological impacts. It provides a comprehensive overview of the activities of Working Group 7 and the results of the intercomparison exercise, highlighting the importance of harmonization and intercomparison in advancing our understanding of tritium release and its environmental consequences.
