Laney Kilpatrick has been renting her vacation home to strangers, a decision that has come with its fair share of challenges. The invasion of privacy causes her panic attacks, but it's the only way she can afford to keep her beloved Hemlock Island, the only thing she owns after a pandemic-fueled divorce. However, the situation has taken a turn for the worse, with broken belongings, campfires that nearly burn down the house, and now terrified renters who have fled after discovering blood and nail marks all over the guest room closet. It seems as though someone tried to claw their way out, but failed.

When Laney arrives to investigate with her teenaged niece in tow, she discovers that her ex, Kit, has also been informed and is there with Jayla, his sister, and her former best friend. Adding to the mix is Sadie, another old high school friend, who charters over with her brother, who is now a cop. Tensions run high, and secrets are whispered in the woods. Before long, they make a horrifying discovery: a hand poking up from the earth, accompanied by a body that goes with it.

But as they try to escape the island, they find themselves trapped with someone or something that doesn't want them leaving alive. The situation becomes increasingly desperate, and they must use all their wits to survive. The question remains: who or what is behind the attacks, and why are they so determined to keep them on the island? The answers may be more terrifying than they could ever imagine.
