George Newnes, the editor, purged each story before publication and replaced Watson's illustrations with Sidney Paget's. In Book 5, titled "The Adventure of the Second Stain," Holmes witnesses the death of his Nanny in Mrs. Hudson's apartment. However, before he can grieve, a fascinating visitor thrusts a new mystery upon him. The man's life is in great danger, and Holmes and Watson offer him an armed escort to Waterloo station.
